Maryland man sentenced to prison and home detention on fraud conspiracy charge for stealing over $1.3 million


WASHINGTON  Mark L. Lezell of Rockville, Md., has been sentenced to 12 months in prison and 12 months of home detention for his role in a fraud conspiracy targeting companies and individuals from across the United States and around the world.
The announcement was made today by Acting U.S. Attorney Channing D. Phillips, Robert Bornstein, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Washington Field Office Criminal Division, and Darrell J. Waldon, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the IRS-CI Washington DC Field Office.
Lezell pled guilty in June 2016, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and one count of failure to file a tax return. He was sentenced on July 28, 2021, by the Honorable Richard J. Leon. In addition to his prison term, the Court ordered Lezell to pay restitution in the amount $1,787,678 as well as a forfeiture money judgment in the amount of $651,955. Wise County man sentenced in unemployment fraud scheme | Internal Revenue Service


ABINGDON, VA   A Wise County, Virginia man, who conspired with others to file for fraudulent pandemic unemployment benefits, was sentenced today to 87 months in prison for conspiring to defraud the United States and conspiring to commit mail fraud.
According to court documents, Travis Kilgore, defrauded the government of more than $182,474 in pandemic unemployment benefits beginning in May 2020. Kilgore was also ordered to pay $164,470 in restitution. The government previously recouped $18,004.
When Kilgore filed numerous false claims for pandemic insurance benefits, he committed a serious crime and stole funds designed to help those truly in need because of the international pandemic, Acting U.S. Attorney Bubar stated today. We are thankful for the good work of the investigative team, including the Department of Labor, IRS and our state and local partners, and will continue to closely work together to bring all who stole from these important programs to justice. ....

Former Maryland tax preparer sentenced to more than two years in federal prison for a tax fraud conspiracy

June 4, 2021 U.S. District Judge Paul W. Grimm today sentenced Anita Fortune, of Alexandria, Virginia, to 30 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for a conspiracy to defraud the United States and for assisting in the preparation and filing of false tax returns. Judge Grimm also ordered Fortune to pay restitution in the full amount of the loss, $189,748. ....
