Back from the lockdown brink, many Kiwi second hand bookshops are flourishing at least while the domestic tourist boom continues. Matteo Di Maio reports
Lockdown. An almost total absence of overseas tourists. A fragile industry at the best of times. And yet, Kiwi second-hand bookstore owners say, business is booming.
Sales are currently above pre-Covid levels, said Rachel Pope, the owner of 
 books in central Hamilton. “It’s been really good great books coming in, great books going out.” Further North, Chloe Clennell from 
Piggery Secondhand Bookshop in Whangarei concurred: “We’ve been incredibly busy since lockdown,” she said. “I think perhaps people have realized that reading isn’t too bad. And while they were in lockdown it was actually a pretty cool thing to do. We had people come in and say: ‘Look, I’ve read everything in my house, please can I have more books.’ ....
