CNN CNN Tonight July 7, 2024

realizing now that children his own age were murdered inside their classroom, inside their school, he s trying to process it all. and he saw my own anxiety this morning and i felt guilty for even causing a little bit of his own. and he actually said to me, don t worry, mommy. i will be home tonight. he said, i make a promise to myself every day that i will make it home at night. now, these should not be the promises any child has to make. not in a nation where our promises to keep them safe have not been kept. i remember when mr. rogers was trying to comfort kids like me by telling them when you see scary things, look for the helpers. look for the helpers. okay, well, as far as we know, the helpers stood in the hallway. the helpers heard shots even after they believed it was a barricade and not an active shooter, and when the helpers aren t being tight hp lipped, they re offering changing narratives but i m still going to look to these helpers. but this time it will be ....

phoenix. jesse: pools are open, baseball is on and families are together. it reminds us of all the things we love about america. but, most importantly, it reminds us of the great sacrifice that was made to give us all the freedoms we enjoy today. so, on this day, we honor and remember those brave young men and women. we wear our red, white, and blue. we fly the american flag and, of course, we attend memorial day parades. as you can see jesse jr. is a big fan of the parade and is he a huge patriot. and stick around, because later we are sending johnny to the beach to find out just how patriotic this younger generation is. it really was an all-american weekend. for the first time in a long time, we were able to celebrate like we always have. no masks, no social distancing, and no doctor fauci wagging his finger and barking orders. just pure patriotism and the feeling of normalcy. americans were loving it we re ready to enjoy the summer. we are ready to get back to norm ....

and we do begin in uvalde, texas, a community still very much in mourning beset by grief after a massacre that left 19 students and two teachers dead. you see them there, a long line of mourners laying flowers at a memorial set up outside robb elementary school. outrage is growing over why a group of law enforcement officers waited so long to rush the gunman. we have seen a mix of emotions, anger, frustration and disappointment after that 911 call timeline became more clear. but folks have wrapped their arms around the folks of uvalde and its community. i ve seen long lines like that for folks waiting to purchase concert tickets or receive free food or other items. but these people are not waiting in line in the oppressive heat to get something, they re here to give and show their support. many have traveled from fear and beyond. i talked to a person from el paso. some people traveled from san antonio, which is about 85 miles away to lay flowers, balloons and stuffed ....

elementary school, could have, should have been confronted sooner. parents demanding answers. why? why were police reluctant to immediately engage with the gunman? one explanation the texas department of public safety initially gave to cnn is that the officers could have been shot or killed, but we now know the mind-set goes directly against texas protocol for school shooter situations, which uvalde police trained for just two months ago. the manual states as first responders, we must recognize that innocent life must be defended. a first responder unwilling to place the lives of the innocent above their own safety should consider another career field. armed officers circled the building and up to 19 of them were inside a school hallway just feet away, kids and teachers in two classrooms were utterly helpless against the gunman. young kids, some covered in the blood of their friends dialed 911 begging for help. nearly 80 minutes after the gunman first entered the buildi ....
