it was part of the estate of robert e. lee, and it was taken from lee when lee was off, putting together the confederate army. and his wife, mariana, who was the decedent of actually, desce descendant of george washington s stepson, she inherited it and eventually they gave it up during the war. 1864, that piece of property, 1100 acres, was turned into the cemetery we see today. i remember from my tours there, it was almost seen as a sleight, right, they would start burying the dead o lee s property, you know it was done as sort of a, this is where we re going to put those who perish. it s the most hallowed space i ve been to in this country. as a reporter with the military, when we would travel with the
