Introducing The Hawk Eye's Citizen Scholar Class of 2021

Introducing The Hawk Eye s Citizen Scholar Class of 2021
The Hawk Eye
Each year, The Hawk Eye asks schools in southeast Iowa and west central Illinois to nominate three students for the Bill Mertens Citizen Scholar Award.
While eachnominee is worthy of the Citizen Scholar title, only one from each school can be selected for a chance at a $1,000 scholarship, named for The Hawk Eye s late publisher who established it in 2001, the third year of the Citizen Scholars program.
The winner will be announced May 30.
The minimum requirement for consideration was a 3.5 grade-point average. Nominees also were expected to demonstrate a four-year career of active engagement in the life of their school and community through participation and leadership in extra-curricular activities, as well as participation in events and organizations beyond their classroom walls in the places where they live. ....

Graduation ceremonies and May excitement return to Burlington schools

The Hawk Eye
A year after COVID-19 forced high schools and colleges to delay or alter their graduation ceremonies, the rites of passage are returning to a more traditional look this spring.
Over the next several weeks, friends and families of this year s graduating seniors will gather at various venues to watch as their loved ones receive their diplomas.
Some ceremonies will look much like they did in years past. Others will be similar to the graduations of 2020, when many were moved outside, delayed by months and seating was limited to allow for social distancing.
For example, Burlington Notre Dame Catholic High School pushed back its graduation ceremony to mid-July and moved it from its usual location in the gymnasium to the football field. Attendance was limited to parents and grandparents.  ....

WAPELLO The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the largest solar energy facility in Iowa, the 127.5 megawatt – direct current Wapello Solar photovoltaic project located on nearly 800 acres of land south of Wapello, was held Friday under a mostly cloudy sky.
Although the cloudy sky prevented the 318,000 solar panels from operating at full capacity, several of the dignitaries who spoke pointed out the facility is capable of providing enough power for more than 20,000 homes. They also explained that since becoming operational in March, the facility along with other clean energy operations in the state now is an important contributor to the Midwest and national power grid. ....

M Power U students focus on Iowa mental health, child care and distance learning legislation

The Hawk Eye
WEST BURLINGTON What do mental health, child care and virtual learning all have in common? They were the topics of discussion at this year s M Power U session.
Juniors from 11 area high schools in the Southeastern Community College student leadership class met Friday with Rep. Garrett Gobble (R-Ankeny), an SCC graduate who was elected this past fall.
SCC was a big part of my life, Gobble said, explaining why he attended M Power U. (I m) very glad to be back and talking to some of these kids who are ready for the next step.
M Power U students typically present their legislative wish-list to legislators in Des Moines when they visit the state s Capitol building during Southeast Iowa Days, but because of COVID-19, they made their presentation at SCC, first virtually with two legislators in attendance and a second time to Gobble, a Danville native, in person.  ....
