Stiff face in elderly people could be a sign of Parkinson's

Uncharacteristic “emotionless” facial expressions in elderly people could be a sign of Parkinson’s disease, a Hualien-based doctor said on Saturday.
“Stiffness of the face is a common symptom of Parkinson’s disease, and in recent years the disease has started affecting people at an earlier age,” Mennonite Christian Hospital neurologist Wu Ling-chih (吳令治) said, adding that people who see symptoms in family members should urge them to consult a physician.
Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disease of the brain, and most people associate it with uncontrollable shaking of the hands, she said.

Agricultural losses top NT$159m as weather hits fruit

Agricultural losses nationwide from a spell of cold and wet weather last month totaled NT$159.97 million (US$5.69 million), with fruit such as mangoes, strawberries and pears among the hardest hit, the Council of Agriculture said on Wednesday.
Pingtung County suffered the most, reporting NT$56.51 million of agricultural losses, or about 35 percent of the national total, as of 5pm on Tuesday, council data showed.
Miaoli County was next with estimated losses of NT $33.66 million, or 21 percent of the national total, followed by Taichung with NT$27.99 million in losses (17 percent), Taoyuan at NT$18.84 million (12 percent) and Hsinchu County at ....

Indigenous vote extends Hualien Asia Cement rights

An indigenous community in Hualien County voted overwhelmingly on Saturday to extend the mining rights of Asia Cement Corp in the county’s Sincheng Township (新城).
Those opposed to the plan said that legal procedures were not observed, and they would continue to fight against the company’s efforts to mine marble in the area.
The Bsngan community, which comprises six indigenous groups living near the mining site, said that the referendum followed proper procedures, showing that 294 households voted for the mining extension, with 45 households against.

A cinematic retrospective of wuxia (武俠, martial arts heroes) movies started on Friday at a public film institute in New Taipei City, showcasing early movies in the martial arts subgenre.
Selected movies being shown at “Wuxia Genre in Taiwan” include Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (臥虎藏龍), a swordplay film by Taiwanese-American director Ang Lee (李安) that won Best Foreign Film at the Academy Awards in 2001, and The Assassin (聶隱娘), which won Hou Hsiao-hsien (侯孝賢) Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival in 2015.
