Back in the Day: Fairfield crime stories from 60 years ago
Crime articles have always been a mainstay of newspapers – although over the years they have changed somewhat. The following stories are my summaries of ones from 1961 editions of the Solano Republican.
Bomb threats at Armijo: On the morning of Sept. 21, 1961, not one, but two anonymous bomb threats were made within two hours of each other warning of explosions that would happen at Armijo High School. Students were moved to Brownlee Field (Armijo’s football field) while police, firefighters and sheriff’s deputies searched the classrooms and ruled both calls hoaxes. While law enforcement did their work, students waiting on the bleachers listened to the Armijo band evidently playing music they deemed most appropriate to accompany bomb searches. ....
