Campaigners in £20k-a-year fight to save Walton Naze's eroding cliffs

A CAMPAIGN group has launched an annual fundraising drive in a desperate attempt to preserve a crumbling cliff face.
The Naze Protection Society has kicked into action with a new target of generating £20,000 every year.
The money will be used to regularly install soft engineered structures such as rock gabions (cages full of rocks) or groynes in order to protect Walton Naze’s corroding coastline.
At a cost of £10,000, the group also hopes to rebuild a sea defence wall called the Tamarisk to keep the sea out of the Walton Channel.
Before any work goes ahead permission will first have be granted by the likes of the Marine Management Organisation, the Environment Agency, Natural England and Tendring Council. ....

'Bloody idiots' climb onto Walton's crumbling Naze cliffs | Maldon and Burnham Standard

RISK-TAKING rock climbers spotted on a section of crumbling cliffs have been blasted as “bloody idiots” who could have been seriously injured.
On Bank Holiday Monday a man and young child were seen on the Walton Naze’s precarious rockface, which has been eroding for several years.
According to shocked eyewitnesses, the pair had climbed onto the cliffs before digging away at the soil and sand, presumably in search of fossils.
One resident, who moved to Walton nearly two years ago, has hit out at the Time Team wannabes for putting themselves in a potentially risky situation.
Speaking anonymously, she said: “They were bloody idiots because the cliffs above them could have come down at any time and that would have been the end of them. ....

A SEAL rescued from a beach in Walton will need months of care following an awful injury caused by litter.
The RSPCA East Winch Wildlife Centre is caring for the seal, which sustained a horrific injury caused by a plastic bag embedded around his neck.
The seal, named Gnocchi by his rescuers, was saved from the beach at the Naze thanks to the efforts of the British Divers Marine Life Rescue team, who rushed him to the wildlife centre in Norfolk.
