east baltimore some other night? people who live along east north avenue say it already has, there have been several fires in vacant homes here. i heard that on the news last night, and it is like it shook me because it could have been me. eleanor anderson moved into a rooming house here about two months ago. she is recovering from drug addiction trying to find a job. in fact, she says years ago when she was using drugs she lived with several other people in an abandoned home. real scary, you know. i just took one day at a time. i mean, i just prayed and god just kept me safe in there. drug use, candles for light and heat, the risks for fire were numerous, and they still are. even though the threat now comes from boarded up homes down the block and across the street. when the buildings, they do travel, and right on these homes, you know, and i think about it every day. joe evans owns his home on north avenue and a few other that is he rents out. his day-to-d ....

and good morning, everyone. george, i just can t imagine, just as families were sitting down to dinner, that explosion hit in that suburb, about 6:30. and police say a gas line erupted into a massive fireball that shot 1,000 feet into the air. leaving a giant crater smackdab in the middle of the neighborhood. eyewitnesss a quarter-mile away say they felt it. and residents in the neighborhood, said there had been concerned about the gas for some time. but there s a lot of confusion and frustration this morning about what is going on with that florida pastor who had threatened to burn the koran tomorrow on the anniversary of 9/11. had a dramatic press conference yesterday afternoon, saying he was canceling the burning on the condition that the mosque and islamic center planned at ground zero is moved. but the islamic center planners say they re not going to budge. and the imam who brokered the deal said there was no deal. it s so confusing. hopefully, we ll get more ....

four-lane traffic here. right now, chicago department of transportation crews are on the scene. they ll be grinding the deteriorating pavement and replacing it with new asphalt. hot weather today and over the past few days most likely caused this to happen. earlier this evening, several sections of the southbound lanes of lakeshore drive had some deterioration due to the intense heat that we ve been having. as a precaution, the city closed down the southbound lanes from roosevelt road to the stephenson. our crews are arriving on site as we speak and will be performing the pavement repairs this evening. our plan is to have the southbound lanes reopened to traffic either tonight or definitely by the morning rush tomorrow. reporter: and brian tells me that this happens a couple of times a year with the chicago department of transportation crews having to come out and fix the pavement with these 90-day 90-degree days that we ve been having, it s most likely and defini ....
