Institute and we had a segment on popular culture. It was me and two guys from the hollywood film industry. The three of us sat on stage for a half hour and talked shop. It was really fun and i learned a lot. The main thing that came out of it, the take away for me was that we in this Different Industries dont talk to each other enough. The thing that distinguish me and maybe that is something i shouldve set at the beginning of an interview, but but the thing that distinguishes me from most other publishers is that im not just in it as a business person. Of course im in business and i need to pick and choose and publish books that make money. Thats very important. Im at the intersection of ideas and commerce. Im a capitalist and commerce is very important. If you publish a book that people dont buy, while you made the decision incorrectly and thats not good. Beyond that role i really am to some extent part of a larger group ....

Hospital, the chief of staff who so generously allowed us to broadcast from the harlem atrium. Its a wonderful place. It was important because while we usually broadcast from schaumburg it was important to introduce another harlem institution and interestingly enough to have a more literally the harlem hospital live, the schaumburg in another way but i wanted you to just know that harlem is a vibrant community, a community that in many ways sustains not only those who live here but is the idea of harlem and what it represents it sustains us all. My wife cheryl and i started in 1988. We established just us books to addressing the needs to reflect our societys diversity. I will moderate the discussion but before we starts i would like to pay a little homage to a great writer we lost last week. Walter myers, winner of many of the awards for children and young adult literature produced a body of work that included more than 100 books for children and young adults. He often wrote about younger africanamericans who battled troubles in the streets, in school and at home, giving them a voice. Also a leading advocate for diversity in childrens literature.
