Hans Küng was only 34 years of age when a visit to the United States firmly established him as the leading theologian of the time. In February 1963, between the first and second sessions of the Second Vatican Council, he began an eight-week tour by addressing an audience of 3,000 in the gymnasium of Boston College. He went on to lecture at Harvard, Yale, the University of Chicago (audience of 5,000), Gonzaga University, the University of California in Los Angeles and elsewhere. An audience of 8,500 heard him speak at the University of St Louis, where he received the first honorary doctorate of his career. ....

Not my President, Not My Pope
In sum, what Biden’s election as President is to the United States, Bergoglio’s election to the papacy is to the Church: a disaster of apocalyptic dimensions.

Now that the provocative title has gotten your attention, an immediate proviso: Joe Biden holds the office of President of the United States, while Jorge Mario Bergoglio holds the office of Pope. In neither the Oval Office nor the Holy See is the chair of authority empty; a body occupies it in each case, even if in Biden’s case the body is barely alive. ....

Neither presidential nor pontifical sedevacantism as such is at issue here all arguments in favor being academic discussions of no practical effect on the possession of the offices in question, at least in my view. The issue to be considered is what we are to make of these two office holders beyond the bare possession of their respective offices. A number of disturbing parallels are apparent. ....

Fratelli Tutti: A new encyclical that seems to "break the mold"

The Catholic Thing website
As a Professor of Ethics and Social Philosophy in a Catholic university, I find fascinating the encyclical’s use of the language throughout of “social friendship” (
amistad social, in Spanish), rather than the familiar “social justice.” There is not a single mention of “social friendship” in the
Catechism that I could find, or the
Compendium of Catholic Social Doctrine. Here if anywhere in the encyclical is the significant development of the tradition of social thought.
Justice is insufficient for social unity, because of its emphasis on impartiality, which becomes “autonomy” and “individuality” in our culture, also, because of the attention it gives to past wrongs, and the encouragement it gives to anger. ....
