ENTERPRISE — A lack of public input by Wallowa County residents led the county commissioners to express disappointment Wednesday, June 21, that the public doesn’t provide more input into matters
ENTERPRISE — It’s been a largely disappointing legislative session the Wallowa County Board of Commissioners has dealt with, as Oregon lawmakers prepare to wrap up business in Salem.
Firefighters from Wallowa, Lostine, Enterprise and Joseph responded along with Oregon Department of Forestry fire crews.
The house was a total loss, said Merel Hawkinsâ daughter Mary Hawkins on Saturday.
âThe fire looked like it started in the woodshed,â she said. âIt spread really fast.â
Merel Hawkins, 84, was shaken, but unhurt and consoled by family, friends and neighbors at the scene. His caregiver, Michaela Shane, had taken the wheelchair-bound family patriarch and former packer out the front door to safety promptly at the first sign of smoke before the fire spread.
The property includes the Hawkins Sisters Chicken Ranch, where several sparks landed.
