Born in Newport on September 8, 1881, he finished in 73rd place in the all round competition at the Vélodrome Municipal de Vincennes. That made him the third of the British gymnasts in a field of 135 competitors, all of who took part in 16 events. But more significantly, his performances on July 29-30, 1900, make him the first Welsh athlete to take part in the Olympic Games. Aberaman-born cyclist Tom Linton also took part in Paris in 1900, but he rode in three professional events in September for which official medals were not awarded. Previously it was understood the honour of being the first Welshman to take part in the Olympic Games was held by Paulo Radmilovic at the 1906 Intercalated Games in Athens.

To the Editor:
It’s been a very challenging 15+ months for the Potsdam Kiwanis Club, especially with the loss of our bi-weekly meeting room hosted by the Ponderosa Steakhouse of Potsdam on Market Street, due to CDC/NYS restrictions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. So many of the children’s programs that originally took place after school hours, but conducted at the Potsdam School District location, either had to be paused or drastically modified.
However, none of this interruption of normalcy stopped the adult members of the Potsdam Kiwanis Club from electronically using Zoom to conduct their meetings from home and continue to plan and serve the children and their community.
