Convenor James Fox said it was important to look at the big picture. ‘’It was disappointing not to have the crowds, but we had to get on with the competition – its important we have someone in the Grand Final.” The competitors had half an hour to complete each of the eight practical modules. This included cooking eggs three different ways and showcasing them to a recent cookery school graduate, and conducting an interview as part of a process to employ a new farm assistant on their dairy farm. They also had to rank five rams, one of which was a teaser, on their ability to improve a flock’s lambing percentage. ....
Flett is a former chairperson of the Thornbury club and is its Teen Ag liaison officer who organises agricultural competitions for primary and high school students. She holds a Teen Ag role with the Otago-Southland young farmers’ organisation. Flett also helps to organise some of the Thornbury club’s activities, including fundraising. One of her short term goals is organising the evening section of the Otago-Southland Regional Final for the NZ Young Farmer of the Year at the Wallacetown Community Centre on March 6. “Sometimes I over commit myself but I love being on these committees and help organise and get other people involved in different events we run [in the Thornbury club), as well as introducing new competitions and events,” Flett said. ....
