Covid-19: Hong Kong experts recommend BioNTech vaccine as city records over 100 new infections on Mon

An expert panel has recommended the use of BioNTech coronavirus vaccines in Hong Kong ahead of a mass roll-out which could begin as early as next month.
The advisory panel on Covid-19 vaccines announced on Monday that it would recommend the use of BioNTech vaccines, acquired by Fosun Pharma, a Shanghai-based pharmaceutical company, to the Food and Health Bureau as the “efficacy outweighs its risks.”

At a press conference, convenor Wallace Lau said the panel considered the safeness, efficacy, and quality of the vaccine in their meeting earlier that day. The panel would also make all advice made by the panel available to the public in order to increase transparency, said Lau. ....

(Bloomberg) The head of the World Health Organization criticized rich nations and drug companies for allowing younger, healthier adults to get vaccinated ahead of health workers and older people in poor countries. “The world is on the brink of a catastrophic moral failure,” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.
The European Union’s executive arm will urge member states to set a target for vaccinating at least 70% of the bloc’s population by this summer, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel and state leaders appear likely to extend lockdown measures. ....

(Bloomberg) The number of U.S. deaths topped 400,000, the worst toll in the world, even as cases fell in all regions. New York City will have to close vaccination sites after Thursday unless it receives a major resupply, Mayor Bill de Blasio said.
Chancellor Angela Merkel and regional leaders agreed to extend and tighten Germany’s restrictions. Ireland’s hospitalizations fell for the first time since Dec. 22, and France is seeing benefits from an earlier curfew. Portugal and the U.K. reported record deaths, while Italy saw some positive indications. ....
