Concerns grow in Japan over British variant
Japanese researchers have found that the British coronavirus variant found in Japan is on average 1.32 times as transmissible as the original virus.
Researchers at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases analyzed the transmissibility of the coronavirus variant first confirmed in Britain from cases reported in Japan during a 50-day period ending on March 22.
They found that variant is indeed more contagious than the preexisting virus.
This variant is being found mostly in Kansai, western Japan at the moment, but scientists say cases are slowly increasing in Tokyo.
The researchers have pointed at the possibility present anti-infection measures alone may not be enough to ward off the virus variant. ....

State of emergency extended for Tokyo | NHK WORLD-JAPAN News

Correspondent
Japan s government is extending its coronavirus state of emergency by two weeks for the greater Tokyo area. It was set to expire this weekend, but will now continue until March 21 in Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama and Chiba prefectures.
The declaration has been in place since January 8. Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide says the two-week extension aims for a further reduction of new infections – and to bring the outbreak under control.
Suga told a Diet committee session on Thursday that the region s coronavirus status has improved almost enough to lift the declaration. But there are still strict indicators, such as the tight situation with hospital beds, he said. I think an extension of about two weeks may be necessary to protect people s lives and livelihoods. ....

Japan's COVID-19 numbers improve, but state of emergency stays in place

Correspondent
Japan s daily tally of new coronavirus cases is steadily declining, but with the healthcare system still under stress, and mutated strains of the virus appearing in Japan, the government says it is too soon to lift the state of emergency in place for Tokyo, Osaka, and eight other prefectures.
Economic Revitalization Minister Nishimura Yasutoshi said on Friday that the government will maintain the state of emergency for the time being.
Nishimura was speaking at a meeting of a panel of experts to advise the government on coronavirus policy. The meeting s members agreed to update their basic anti-coronavirus guidelines to reflect recent legal revisions that allow tougher enforcement of anti-infection rules. The revised legislation was approved in the Diet earlier this month and will take effect on Saturday. It will allow officials to fine people and businesses that break anti-virus rules. ....
