Once an isolated region barely touched by the hands of time, Afghanistan s Wakhan Corridor stands on the brink of great change with the building of a new road linking it with China.
On the cusp of six borders
Bordered by China, Iran, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan lies at the very heart of Asia. Home to more than 32 million people, a quarter of its population lives in large urban centres such as Mazar-e Sharif (pictured), located 320km south-east of the capital Kabul. The fourth-largest city in the country, its centrepiece is the Shrine of Hazrit Ali – a masterpiece of Islamic architecture, which, according to local legend, is the burial place of Ali, the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad. BROUGHIL, Afghanistan One of the world’s most isolated communities in northeastern Afghanistan is facing unprecedented hardships because of disease, a harsh winter, grinding poverty, and food shortages.
Residents of the Wakhan Corridor say the coronavirus pandemic has considerably increased their problems in the region, which already suffered from isolation and underdevelopment.
Wakhan is a narrow strip of territory that includes the Pamir Mountains. The sparsely populated region connects Afghanistan to western China while separating eastern Tajikistan from northwestern Pakistan.

KABUL, Dec 14: Seventy-nine per cent of minorities in Afghanistan do not see themselves represented in the on going peace process, a latest survey by a human right’s organization has revealed.
The survey titled “the Vulnerable Minorities and the Peace Process” was compiled by the Moasesae Hoqooq-e-Bashar wa Mahwe Khoshonat (a “human rights and elimination of violence organization”), it involved the random participation of 595 individuals from various minority communities, it was carried out in the provinces of Bamiyan, Badakhshan, Balkh, Ghor, Kabul, Nangarhar, Nuristan, Nimroz and Jawzjan. ....
