A Northland firefighter has been presented with his New Year s Honour by Governor-General Patsy Reddy at Government House in Wellington. Jim Powdrill, a member of the Kaikohe Fire Brigade since 1963, received a Queen s Service Medal for services to Fire and Emergency NZ. In his time with the brigade he has been a driver, pump operator and trainer, fitted smoke alarms in almost every house in Kaikohe and cleaned chimneys in response to a rise in chimney fires. He was made a life member of the brigade in 1988. He has also volunteered with St John, Kaikohe Pioneer V

The Bay of Islands Country Rock Festival celebrates 32 years this year and it s still going strong. This year features over 40 musicians performing at multiple locations in Paihia and Russell. Topping the bill are the A-team, the old perennials Brendan Duggan, Gray Bartlett, Susan Prentice, Jodi Vaughan and Aly Cook and Eddie Lowe the Midnite Special Band.

Paid lifeguards have stopped patrolling Northland s surf beaches during the week, including Ocean Beach, above. But volunteers will still be on patrol at weekends until Easter.

Weekday patrols by surf lifeguards at Northland s patrolled beaches have finished after the paid lifeguard season ended.
However, weekend patrols with volunteer lifeguards will still continue until Easter at the beaches - Ruakākā, Waipū Cove, Mangawhai Heads, Ocean Beach, Whangārei Heads and Ahipara.
