Support shown for continuance of Waiheke Governance Pilot

A report evaluating a governance pilot running on Waiheke over the last three years has been released this week by Auckland Council’s Research and Evaluation Unit (RIMU).
The pilot was set up in late 2017 after Auckland Council’s 2016 Governance Framework Review revealed that local boards did not feel sufficiently empowered to fulfil their role. Its purpose was to trial the impact of giving greater decision-making authority to Waiheke Local Board and to provide further support to the board.
The report looks at the results of the pilot using interviews with Waiheke Local Board members and staff from Auckland Council and Council-Controlled Organisations (CCOs) like Auckland Transport (AT), alongside surveys of the Waiheke community. ....

Climate hui on Waiheke will help shape local action plan

A project is in the works that will provide a road map for Waiheke to become a low carbon community.
Auckland Council is hosting a hui next week which will bring together local organisations and community members that are working towards a transition to a carbon-neutral future. The objective of the hui is to co-create a Climate Action Plan for Waiheke.
Liz Ross, Auckland Council Low Carbon Specialist, says the project will help to achieve Waiheke Local Board’s objective of supporting community-led programmes that achieve sustainable and low-carbon behaviour change and self-sufficiency.
“It will bring together and amplify work that’s already underway within the community, and aims to identify gaps and opportunities for new local projects that align with Auckland’s Climate Plan Te Tāruke-ā-Tāwhiri. ....

Auckland's Waiheke Island seeks Dark Sky sanctuary status

She said visitors flocked to Waiheke to see the beaches and vineyards but the accreditation could spark a gradual shift towards eco-tourism and sustainability.
“If people come to look at the starry skies, it’s a different kind of people than the 20-somethings that have come here for a hen party.”
Research shows bright lighting at night is harmful to human health and impacts on wildlife, Davies said.
“Turtles come to the shore to lay their eggs and the baby turtles, when they hatch, use moonlight to navigate their way back to the ocean,” she said. ....
