YANGON Thousands of social media users including some elected lawmakers from Myanmar’s National League for Democracy (NLD) have joined a campaign on social media denouncing China and Russia after the two countries blocked a UN Security Council statement condemning the military coup.
On Tuesday, the Security Council held an emergency meeting on Myanmar, but was unable to agree on a statement condemning the military regime after China and Russia asked for more time to consider it. However, diplomats said negotiations would continue. ....

Just before 5 a.m. Monday, three officers from Myanmar’s national police force showed up at Po Po’s home in Yangon. Further army clampdown feared in Myanmar after Aung San Suu Kyi detained


The military’s actions, which came a decade after it agreed to share power with civilian leaders, were condemned by governments around the world.
The US president, Joe Biden, called on the international community to press Myanmar’s military to give up power, release detainees and refrain from violence against civilians. He threatened sanctions, adding that the US will defend democracy around the world.
“In a democracy, force should never seek to overrule the will of the people or attempt to erase the outcome of a credible election,” Biden said.
The UN secretary general, António Guterres, said the developments represented “a serious blow to democratic reforms in Myanmar”. ....
