Birds of Saudi Arabia

Birds of Saudi Arabia
Title Picture
Bani Mashoor Ancient Village is near An Namas in the western mountains and has a large tower and some ruined buildings. The weather was very poor with low cloud and rain when we visited so I took only a few photos of the location, as we did not stay long.
Whilst birding the far northwest of Saudi Arabia, near Turaif, in January 2021 I found a Short-eared Owl in the basalt lava area near the Jordan boarder This is a scarce to uncommon winter visitor to all areas north of Jeddah, Riyadh and Hofuf. Two birds have been seen on occasion including two on Bisaita plain in the north of the Kingdom on 13 February 2009. In the Riyadh area it is a rare or scarce winter visitor. The Eastern Province has had records of multiple birds with a minimum of eight near Wari’ah, Diddibah 12-13 February 1987 and six Al Asfar Lake Jnauary to February 2018. This is only the second time I have seen the species in Saudi Arabia after seeing four at Al Asfar ....

Birds of Saudi Arabia: Seven species of Wheatear – Wadi Ad Dewasir

Seven species of Wheatear – Wadi Ad Dewasir
Whilst birding the Wadi Ad Dewasir area of central Saudi Arabia in November Phil Roberts and I found seven species of Wheatear. The most common was Isabelline Wheatear that were common in many of the spray fields visited. Desert Wheatear, Northern Wheatear, Pied Wheatear and a single Eastern Black-eared Wheatear were also seen in the fields. Closer to the escarpment edge, in rocky areas with some cover, we found both Red-tailed Wheatear and Eastern Mourning Wheatear (
persica). As Wadi Ad Dewasir is in central Saudi Arabia and bird numbers are relatively low the seven species of Wheatear made up 12% of all the species we recorded in three days birding the location. ....

Birds of Saudi Arabia: Siberian Chiffchaff

Siberian Chiffchaff - Wadi Ad Dewasir
Whilst birding at Wadi Ad Dewasir this winter we fund four active Common Chiffchaff feeding in some roadside scrub. Three birds appeared to be normal
abietinus type and the one a rather duller paler looking bird. The bird showed a brown and buff livery without any yellow away from the bend of the wing. It also had a buff supercillium and upper half of the eye-ring with the underparts suffused with buff. The Siberian Chiffchaff is a vagrant to Saudi Arabia with this bird being the third record for the Kingdom after two birds trapped and ringed in Jubail 23 January 2015 and 17 March 2017. Birds are possibly more common than known presently and may be overlooked, as care is needed with identification. ....
