It seemed like a small thing at the time, my dawning interest swimming in an insurmountable ocean, but it felt like a gigantic personal step. I had to place parameters around my furtiveness. I wanted the pioneers I represented to be mostly unknown (at least to me) subjects. And I decided that I was going to use only black and white, because color was so overwhelmingly colorful. Oh, and I had not painted in 20 years, so I wasn’t even sure I could do it. ....
