Hedgesville woman dedicates life to helping keep families united


MARTINSBURG — For lifelong Hedgesville resident Annie Otto, heartache and triumph in her own life fueled a passion for child safety as she’s spent her lifetime ensuring children remain with their families when their parents are unable to care for them.
Admired for her passion, knowledge and deep love of helping children of all ages find peace and comfort in their home lives, however that may be, Otto hadn’t always been on the forefront advocating for the rights of grandparents and the grandchildren they care for.
According to the mother of three, she spent much of her working career as the supervisor of transportation for the Berkeley County Board of Education, had obtained her associate degree from Hagerstown Junior College and was a certified veterans official. ....

Columbia College sophomore Vivian Jackson shares a one-bedroom apartment in Hell’s Kitchen with her family. When Columbia went remote last spring, she struggled to attend Literature Humanities while her mother, a ballet teacher, taught plies and how to stand en pointe a few feet away from her laptop. While the commute would have been easy, the opportunity to have her own room, reliable Wi-Fi, and an on-campus job compelled her to live in the dorms this fall. As one of many students who requested on-campus housing this fall, Jackson identifies as a first-generation, low-income college student. On August 14, Columbia reversed its initial decision to bring up to 60 percent of undergraduates back to cam ....
