Advocacy Updates ~ April 5, 2021 April 5, 2021 On March 30, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) released its Vision for Health System Strengthening 2030, which examines progress over the last decade, as well as new challenges, and reaffirms USAID’s long-term goal of building resilient health systems. The vision recognizes the criticality of integrated, systems-based approaches to health system strengthening, particularly in light of COVID-19. It aligns well with many of the priorities outlined in GHC’s On Thursday, April 15, the U.S. will co-host the launch of the Investment Opportunity for the COVAX Advance Market Commitment (AMC) with Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. The virtual convening will call on partners to join the U.S. in committing to accelerate global COVID-19 vaccinations. The U.S. has committed $2 billion to Gavi to support the purchase and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines in 92 low-and middle-income countries through the COVAX AMC.

February 22, 2021 By John Ariale, Principal, Husch Blackwell Strategies and Global Health Council Board Member Recently, Global Health Council’s President and Executive Director, Loyce Pace, shared her thoughts on the new 2021 Global Health Briefing Book (GHBB). Today, I want to share my own experience as someone who has benefited from this material in the past and continues to benefit from it today. After a 25-year career on Capitol Hill, and having served as the Chief of Staff and Appropriations Associate for a Member of Congress on the House Appropriations Committee and the State, Foreign Operations (SFOPs) Subcommittee, I now have had the privilege of continuing my service to the global health community as a Global Health Council (GHC) Board member. Having served in all of these roles, I am in a unique position to speak to the value of the GHBB for its intended congressional audience, as well as for the broader global health community.

Hindsight is 2020 A few months ago, I talked about a global health marathon. Now, with several additional mile markers behind us, the 2020 race is nearly in our rear view mirror. Before we cross the finish line, finally getting this year behind us, I want to highlight what we’ve done in the last quarter to further global health progress. At a high level side event, held on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly in September, advocates focused on spurring global investment for the Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator (ACT-A) and, in particular, ACT-A’s vaccine pillar (COVAX). At the same time, GHC sought to mobilize support for ACT-A and COVAX here in the U.S. Our team led a
