Matter with their refusal to even consider a short term funding bill known as a continuing resolution. Its a measure which could realistically be brought to the floor of congress over the past few days before funding runs out next saturday at midnight. Instead, republican holdouts want to consider each appropriations bill separately which is a time consuming and extensive process that would take more than a week. Ahead of the call with republicans yesterday afternoon, speaker Kevin Mccarthy expressed a bit of hope, telling reporters he things when it gets down to crunch time the holdouts will, quote, hopefully move off. A few hours later, however, this meant, delusion a congressman garrett grace, a mccarthy ally, you will remember him, he was instrumental in the Debt Ceiling Negotiations of few months back. He had tougher words. He compared the holdouts to arsonists who burned their own houses down than want credit for putting the fire out, he added, quote, anyone who says we are going

variant out in time to make a difference? well, you know, symone, it s partially evading it, but on the other hand if you re vaccinated and boosted, and preferably double boosted, it makes a big difference. that gives you a very high level of virus neutralizing antibodies against the original variant. there s enough there to spill over and neutralize the ba.5. that s why he s sitting, doing zoom calls instead of doing in the hospital right now. first and foremost because he is doubly boosted. only about a quarter of americans over the age of 65 have gotten that second booster. we re failing to get that message, and we have a lot of unnecessarily hospitalizations. remember we are still over 400 deaths a day. it s not the 2 to 3 thousands that we saw earlier, but it s still the third leading death in the united states. so there s still a lot to do with the existing tools.

it shows that after you get that third immunization, whereas it was, you know, reinstalling 90%, 95% protection versus the previous lineages, it s around 70% to 75% against omicron. still pretty good and much better against hospitalizations. but against symptomatic infections, 70%, 75%. the problem is it s not holding up. it seems to be going down quickly after two or three months, down to maybe 30% to 40% according to imperial college. the idea for the fourth immunization, again, is another way to keep our health care workers in the health care workforce to rebump up their virus neutralizing antibodies. so my recommendation specifically for the health care workers, although israel is extending that not only to health care workers but those individuals either over the age of 60 or 70, and like so many other things, we depend so heavily on israel and the uk for vaccine effectiveness data, and we ll see what happens with that

calling for a fourth dose a month ago. israel already offers the fourth shot for high-risk groups, health care workers, anyone over 60. should the u.s. do the same? well, i think right now it s probably too late because by the time you get that through and get the fda and cdc to sign off on it and by the time we get an immune response and vaccinated health care providers and that s the group i suggested that we tried for it will be three or four weeks from now and by then possibly the omicron wave will have subsided and we ll be having to worry about the next variant. so i think at this point, the best thing to do is to let s see what the data from israel shows. the reason i was concerned about not giving a second booster was based on information that we got from imperial college london showing that within a couple of months after the boost, you got a decline in effectiveness down to 30% to 40% so the idea is you boost, get a big bump in virus neutralizing antibodies and
