St. Croix is full of hidden gems. However, getting to the island is tricky. The best option is to take a daily 20-minute flight from St Thomas, then rent a car.
Water Island is great to camp and explore, especially the underground bunkers and watch towers of Fort Segarra, an unfinished fort that was abandoned at the end of World War II. 
The Charlotte Amalie, a historic area on St. Thomas, is where you ll find the famous 99 (actually 103) steps stairway that is built from the ballast bricks of European ships.
