Vijayabaskar was re-elected for the third consecutive time from the Viralimalai Assembly constituency with the official declaration of his victory coming on Monday morning. The prolonged delay in announcement of Mr. Vijaybasker’s victory was due to stoppage of counting thrice on Sunday, leading to anxiety and tension. At the end of the final round of counting, Mr. Vijayabaskar won comfortably defeating his nearest DMK rival M. Palaniappan by a margin of 23,598 votes. Mr. Vijayabaskar polled 1,02,179 votes against 78,581 votes by Mr. Palaniappan. There were in all 22 candidates in the electoral fray in the constituency. ....

Image Source: IANS News Chennai, May 2 : The DMK, which seems set to come to power in Tamil Nadu, on Sunday requested the Election Commission to replace the Returning Officer of the Viralimalai Assembly constituency for malpractice and count the votes as per law. In its complaint, the DMK said around 4,000 votes polled in favour of the party candidate Palaniappan were counted in favour of AIADMK candidate and Health Minister C. Vijayabaskar, who was shown to be leading with about 3,000 votes. ....

Uma Maheswari that a paper tag with signatures of booth agents and a polling official was found abandoned. The unit suspects that the tag got detached from electronic voting machines (EVMs) brought from the Viralimalai Assembly constituency. The party has expressed apprehension that one of the machines may have been replaced. The paper tag was noticed by DMK cadre after EVMs of the six Assembly constituencies were kept inside strong rooms at the counting centre in the morning, in the presence of the Collector, administration officials and representatives of parties. ....
