In Gabon, a few minutes after the release of the official results of the general elections, a group of soldiers announced the cancellation of the vote and the dissolution of the institutions. Among the soldiers who spoke on Gabon 24 television on August 30 were members of the Republican Guard (GR), the Praetorian Guard of the Presidency (Green Berets) and regular army soldiers and police officers. The national authority in charge of the election had just declared President Ali Bongo Ondimba, in power for fourteen years, winner of these elections in one round with 64.27% of the votes cast.
