the government has held an emergency cobra meeting to discuss how to respond to the record temperatures expected to hit parts of the uk next week. a national emergency has already been declared after the met office issued a red extreme heat warning for the very first time, meaning there s a risk to life. an amber warning has been announced for tomorrow, affecting parts of england and wales, and that extends to scotland on monday. then the red warning will come into effect across a large part of england. our correspondentjon donnison has the very latest. it is without doubt weather for mr whippy, and at roundhay park in leeds, he s been doing a roaring trade. so, yeah, it s been extremely busy. we re just working 12 hours every single day, in the heat and obviously monday and tuesday next week, itjust looks like it s going to be unbearable. here we go. keeping cool is going to be key. ..with temperatures expected to reach the high 30s and even a0 celsius. concerned about ....

0 welcome to msnbc on a busy friday afternoon. president biden giving an update on the chaotic situation, the evacuation of americans and afghans as the white house continues to deal with the fallout from the crisis unfolding in afghanistan. the president says evacuation flights have resumed. that is of being paused for several hours. sources tell nbc news the flights stopped temporarily because qatar, the first batch of evacuees were taken, didn t have the capacity to take any more people. this has its situation outside the airport gets more desperate. thousands of afghans hoping for a chance to get inside and get on a plane out of the country. the president defended his situation to get out of afghanistan in a report that nearly two dozen diplomats at the u.s. embassy in kabul sent a cable to tony blinken warning of a possible taliban takeover and urged an airlift operation. i made the decision, the buck stops with me. i took the consensus opinion. it would not occur if it occurred ....

We ve got these big care backlogs that we re, kind of, trying to get through as quickly as possible, and we are tackling the most complex cases to start with, and that means that those patients need to have overnight stays, because they re difficult cases. the next few weeks will give us a clear idea of how or if this will affect plans to open up next month. i ve been speaking to professor peter 0penshaw, from imperial college london, about the need for public vigilence as restrictions ease. i think we just need to be very cautious and need to keep an eye on the figures. we would all love to be able to open up again but the last thing we want is to see another major surge because of the circulation of these new variants which appear to be more transmissible, and to be able to escape to some degree from the immune response induced by vaccines. you know, i think the good news ....
