Around we re going to welcome revelers into the viewing pens later in the day to reduce the time that they re in the pens. but that s not times square. i m sorry too square will be open throughout the day, just the revelers who are in the viewing pens will be allowed in after 3:00 in the afternoon. this isn t an easy decision for any mayor or city to make. what all went into the decision? there was a big question, everyone at least, you know, publicly wondering if it was going to have to be canceled all together because of the fear of omicron. what went into this decision? so, i want to actually thank cnn and your medical expert, dr. leana wen, who sort of said it s an outdoor event, we re requiring proof of vaccinations, and we have to find ways to do things that are fun in a safe and responsible manner. i think she said you can t cancel everything. so like i said, for us, it was how we do it safely, not if we did it, and we re encouraged ....
Number of people testing positive continues to climate really just kind of an incredible pace. 44,431 people now testing positive for the omicron for the coronavirus. certainly as these numbers continue to increase, of course the city is concerned, the state is concerned, but what they are looking at, and this is really important, kate, is the number of hospitalizations. they say the vaccines are working and that really what it tells them is because the hospitalizations are not increasing, that is a good sign, and that is why we are seeing the mayor and other city officials here say we re going to allow people into times square on new year s eve. we re going to allow less people, 15,000, into these viewing pens. normally they allow up to 60,000, but they still feel it s safe enough to allow that many people in with some social distancing, so that s what they are going to do. as you can see, the numbers here ....

In addition, they ll have 100 blocker vehicles all over. they range from police cruisers to larger trucks as well. 7,000 nypd officers will be stationed throughout the city. that includes 550 new graduates. and there will be 65 viewing pens all over times square from 42nd street. all the way to 59th street. the amazing thing about those viewing pens is that the nypd aims to fit about 3,000 people inside each of those pens. so it will be quite a gathering out here. you can see just behind me, some of the pens out here. these are all of the barricades put in place by the nypd. they ll open up this area in a little bit. that s actually, if you can believe it, the crowds will start gathering here, despite the fact that we re still about 16 1/2 hours until that big ball drop there. but this will be an extremely safe area. they ll have counterterrorism teams. heavy weapons teams will be very visible from this area. ....
