She said hand rearing baby birds is time-intensive, with some birds needing constant small feeds as often as every 30 minutes. Guthrie said the babies need to be kept warm and fed constantly, something she can no longer keep up with alongside her work commitments. She said it has been a really hard decision, one she has put off for “too long’’. “I’m gutted that I ve had to do this, but something had to give”. She feels it is the only responsible thing to do and allow her to continue caring for sick and injured adult birds. There is no doubt she will be faced with turning people away.
“They were being fed regularly, but were able to nest and hide their eggs from the staff who checked on them regularly and mother nature did the rest.’’ Banks said the council did not have the facility to relocate the birds and if let go in a different location they would just come back home [Victoria Park]. “The costs have increased by around $200 per month for the whole zoo.” “The parks and reserve team are currently working on a couple of dove houses to allow the remaining pigeons to come and go freely and will help keep our numbers at a manageable level.”
