The Coroner s court said that it was concerning that the frequency of suicides among the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population in Victoria was twice that of the non-Indigenous community. The court has reported Victoria had one of the highest rates of suicide for First Nations people in the country during 2020. Latji Latji man Stephan Gocol from the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service at Mildura said the March visit from the court s Koori unit involved a community discussion. Educating people on suicide and then the flow-on effects of it, like the effect it has on the family, it would help deter it, Mr Gocol said. ....
A young woman found naked and bound at a Melbourne creek more than 40 years ago was killed by her stepfather, a coroner has ruled. Barbara Dawson was last seen alive on October 29, 1980. The 20-year-old s body was discovered partially submerged in a shallow ford at Kororoit Creek in the western suburb of Altona North three days later. She was naked with her throat cut and plastic bags around her head and her feet. A 1981 inquest could not determine who killed her. In 2003, her stepfather Peter Dawson was arrested. Neither he nor anyone else was charged, and he died in Queensland in 2008 at the age of 65. ....

Marilyn Burdon, 70, was found dead at her Kew home in 2017. Her partner, Charles Bisucci, killed her and then himself. An inquest is looking at how the former solicitor who had his gun licence cancelled and 15 of his firearms seized in 2004, was able to keep accessing weapons. One of the seized guns, a Winchester rifle, was used in the murder-suicide.
