roanoke, virginia, pamela brown, digging into all of this joins us now, pamela. reporter: well john, today we re learning police believe vester flanagan was heading towards a pre-planned investigation and with a car pool of supplies including weapons. investigators can only guess what he planned to do next. as we learn new details about the horrific murders through the husband of the lone survivor. tonight, we are hearing for the first time the account of vicky gardner, the lone survivor in wednesday s deadly attack. her husband, tim, told abc news vicky never saw the gunman, vester flanagan before he opened fire. she shot three times at my wife. and she was trying to dodge everything. he missed twice, and then she dove to the ground and curled up in a ball and that s when he shot her in the back. pulled the trigger several times and only fired once. reporter: but that one bullet nearly took her life. she got up and walked to the ambulance after being shot, but
that warm yet. when this thing gets into the bahamas area, when it finally gets into this warm iraer air a warmer water, that s where it could gain hurricane strength. it will be moving in to that area very close this weekend. thank you, chad. let s go back to chris. we are still here in roanoke, virginia. and we are monitoring a national election, a lot of the issues there talked about in the hypothetical, but we are asking donald trump what he thinks we should do in situations like this. and we want to remember not everybody was taken in this execution yesterday on live television. vicky gardner is alive and recovering. and she was being interviewed on live television when the bullets started to fly. we ll have her husband talk about this, what it means to her and him when new day continues.
flanagan s family spoke to reporters after the shooting. the statement was short and expressed grief for the victims and did not mention the shooter. it s with heavy hearts and deep sadness that we express our deepest condolences to the families of alison parker and adam ward and praying for recovery of vicky gardner. our thoughts and prayers at this time are with the victims family and with the wdbj television family. a gun recovered from flanagan is a glock 19. that is a 9 millimeter pistol. he legally purchased it and another glock pistol in july. ballistic tests will be performed to determine which gun was used. he put a deposit on a gun two days after the church shooting.
and vicky dealt with yesterday on an average american day. 88 of us will deal with that same kind of scenario again today. that is the reality that we are dealing with in this country in 2015. and the disconnect is the american public wants something to be done but we have elected officials who give talking points and then nothing, and we let that be the case repeatedly and we have the same conversation over and over again. so instead of having frankly, pointing the cameras at us to talk about this, you should be pointing the cameras at the elected officials who sit on the committees who refuse to hear bills on this subject, who refuse to even have a discussion or a hearing on gun violence in america. those are the people who should be held accountable at this point in time. colin, did you hear alison parker s father and what he said to chris cuomo? incredibly moving what he said. i couldn t really know why. but what he s trying to this si come to be.
