Learning to live with death? Spain's capital region loosens COVID-19 restrictions despite elevated infection figures

Learning to live with death? Spain’s capital region loosens COVID-19 restrictions despite elevated infection figures MarketWatch 2/22/2021 DISPATCHES FROM A PANDEMIC While other European cities remain tightly locked down, Spain’s capital, Madrid, already less restrictive than its peers, gifted its population a further hour of freedom last week. Headed by Isabel Díaz Ayuso, the region’s government shifted the curfew by an hour to 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., from a prior one that started at 10 p.m. That came about despite pleading from the country’s health minister, Carolina Darias, for regions to keep all restrictions in place, as COVID-19 numbers remain high and hospitals are under pressure.

Why Indonesia is vaccinating its working-age adults before the elderly

Why Indonesia is vaccinating its working-age adults before the elderly MarketWatch 1/14/2021 © POOL/AFP via Getty Images Countries across the world have begun vaccination drives, mobilizing to protect their elderly and most vulnerable citizens from COVID-19. Indonesia, however, is adopting a different approach, as it plans to give priority to working-age adults over older members of society when its vaccine program starts on Wednesday. The Southeast Asian country’s food and drug authority BPOM authorized the emergency use of Beijing-based Sinovac’s vaccine on Monday, and 3 million doses have been distributed to health centers across the country. Health minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin has previously said the country needs to vaccinate 181.5 million people, 67% of the population, to reach herd immunity.
