He said a 30 per cent downturn “wiped out” the profit for hospitality businesses, which operated in a “tight margin industry”.
“This summer trade has put hospitality businesses seriously on the back-foot in terms of cashflow to get through the winter months, during which time most outlets normally take a loss anyway, and we have little to reassure us of the likelihood of good trading levels in the 2021-2022 summer.”
He said there had been closures of “long-standing” restaurants in New Zealand’s major centres, and Nelson would not be immune.
“We are all extremely worried about our survival. Some outlets will inevitably go under . It’s not the fault of any business, simply the impact of Covid.” ....
