Missouri Bill Would Allow Convicted Felons to Run for Elected OfficeOzark Radio News

(Via MissouriNet) Missouri law bans convicted felons from running for office. A bill filed this legislative session would change that. State Representative Michael Davis, R-Kansas City, is proposing to let felons seek elected office. The Missouri House Committee on Elections and Elected Officials is reviewing his bill. State Representative Kevin Windham, D-Hillsdale, questioned why they would have to wait seven years to run for office. "Individuals can currently run for Congress with convictions on the record," he said during a public hearing on the bill. "My bill includes a seven-year cooling off period where after conviction it would require seven years to pass." "It just strikes me that somebody will have to wait seven years in order to run for office with this bill," said Windham. "I understand that that's an improvement. However, we just heard a bill even on the floor, where folks would immediately be able to concealed carry a firearm – no ....

Diapers in Missouri Could Become Tax-Free SoonOzark Radio News

(Via MissouriNet) A visit to Happy Bottoms diaper bank in the Kansas City area has inspired a Missouri lawmaker to help families with their bottom line. State Representative Patty Lewis, D-Kansas City, has filed a bill that would exempt diapers from sales tax. It would cover diapers for children and adults. Lewis points to a study showing the average Missouri family spends about $1,500 annually on diapers. Currently, diapers are considered a luxury item and they are taxed at 4.2%."It was very eye opening. I think I was a little naive to how diaper insecurity impacts the entire family, you know, mentally, financially and from a healthcare perspective," she says. "Saving 4.2% of $1,500 would be significant especially in these days," says Lewis. As far as the health problems that can arise from a lack of diapers, Lewis knows. She has more than 20 years of health care experience as an ICU/Critical Care Registered Nurse, as well as a Health Care Executive. "Sitting ....

Missouri's Coronavirus Rapid Testing Program RelaunchedOzark Radio News

(Via MissouriNet) Missouri's coronavirus rapid testing program is back. The state Department of Health and Senior Services suspended the program indefinitely back in early January because of a nationwide shortage of tests and issues with receiving tests from a distributor called Abbott. The rapid tests are used in schools, the state's seven veterans homes, mental health sites, and long-term care centers, for instance. The state still cannot get Abbott BinaxNOW tests. Missouri has instead found two distributors it says has an adequate supply of ACON Flow Flex rapid antigen tests. The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) says schools must re-apply to participate in the program, and complete other requirements. When the state had to temporarily pull the plug on the program, DESE spokesperson Mallory McGowin said the tests have often meant the difference between a staff member working or not on a given day. "It's obviously a really difficult p ....

Missouri Highschoolers May Become Required To Fill Out FAFSA Forms Before GraduationOzark Radio News

(Via MissouriNet) The National College Attainment Network says Missouri high school graduates missed out on $71.3 million in Pell grants in 2021 because they did not complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid, known as the FAFSA. The FAFSA is used to consider eligibility for federal grants, federal loans, and state grants. State Senator Karla Eslinger, R-Wasola, is proposing to require Missouri high schoolers to fill out the application before graduating. In the 2020-21 academic year, more than 1.7 million high school graduates nationally did not fill out the FAFSA. Just under half of those graduates – about 813,000 students – were Pell Grant-eligible. According to the National College Attainment Network, eight states require students to fill out the FAFSA – Louisiana, Texas, Illinois, California, Alabama, Colorado, New Hampshire and Maryland. Several other states are considering similar measures. During a Missouri Senate Education Committee about Eslinger's bill, ....
