laws. a source tells cnn that mitch mcconnell has privately expressed openness to raising the age to buy them but he won t say so publicly. it won t surprise you to know that i m not going to sit here and try to negotiate the deal with all you guys. we re waiting to see if we can get an outcome that directly relates to the problem that brought the issue to the fore. daniella diaz is live on capitol hill for us. what are republicans concerned about, are there divisions among them on this issue? reporter: there is divisions about what they actually want to see on any sort of gun safety legislation that could pass through the senate. there is still the more conservative senators like senator ted cruz and ron johnson that don t want to pass any legislation and wouldn t support any sort of bill in the senate. of course there are negotiatneg, john cornyn of texas being one of them, that is trying to reach some sort of deal to get ten republicans on board to support any gun sa
safety legislation. there is another senator who told my colleague yesterday that she is open to gun safety legislation, and that senator being from wyoming, a conservative, she said that she is hearing more calls from her constituents on gun safety reform. so it looks like there could be enough republicans to pass some sort of legislation. of course these negotiations continue and they are not there just yet. and we ll have to see what happens to raising the age from 18 to 21 on buying those assault-style rifles. appears to be off the table but one of the arguments you are hearing is that an 18-year-old can join the army and go to war for the united states, they should be able to buy a weapon. there are holes in that argument, right? because an 18-year-old doesn t have the right automatic throw go to war, they have to be vetsed by the u.s. military, they have to go through training. and many are actually not qualified to go to war. so if you want to use the argument, maybe put the s

out for the gop. megyn: is there an argument all these attacks, even the ugly ones. that that will wind up helping the republican candidate because it s been out there, it s less shocking? certainly the process is tedious and i m sure the candidates are tired. but in the long run they are being vetsed. all the controversial topics are being talked about. and this is something we want to talk about now, it s slate january. get out it s late january. get out of the way and we ll get into substantive issues with the president in october. megyn: does it make you feel uncomfortable when you hear them getting ugly. do it make you uncomfortable? no. mitt romney had a great debate. it was his best ever. people want a fighter.
in a later conversation i asked if what we were doing was legal. i was adviced by jim need needl. it was had been vetsed through doj attorneys and there was nothing illegal. just because something is legal doesn t mean it s moral. any gun puts in the hand of a criminal creates a danger. any arizona police officer who might encounter these people on their way down to the border more anybody who encounters one of these drugs that might be diverted to new york or baltimore or any other city notice united states. it s tragic. martha: what was your understanding what happened to peek who bucked the system and said innocent lives will be lost. the two of agents that didn t agree with the state were removed from that group. another person who was alloyed to participate in that case who is involved in the intelligence gathering was promoted
