Female veterinarians say gender disparity remains an uphill battle This is the fourth in a four-part series, “On Call: Vets Under Stress”, that explores the pressures and overwhelming challenges facing those who choose a career in providing care for our animals. In 2009, the American Veterinary Medical Association reported that female veterinarians outnumbered their male counterparts for the first time. While they make up more than half of the veterinarians in the industry today, a culture of masculinity still exists. Veterinarian grads struggle to pay off student loans in rural areas This is the second in a four-part series, “On Call: Vets Under Stress”, that explores the pressures and overwhelming challenges facing those who choose a career in providing care for our animals. While student loan debt has ballooned across the board for all college students, veterinary students continue to feel the brunt of rising education expenses as they amass large amounts of debt while receiving relatively low pay rates. Sheboygan, Wis., native Nick Mayer graduated from the College of Veterinary Medicine - University of Minnesota with over $360,000 in student debt. He says out of state tuition added to that total tremendously. After graduation he was determined to pay the debt down as soon as possible. ....
Many Midwestern communities suffer from veterinary clinic shortages Veterinary experts say Midwestern states are suffering from shortages of veterinary professionals in their rural communities. On a national level, according to the US Department of Agriculture, over 500 counties in 44 states had vet shortages in 2019, many of them rural areas. And beyond that, independent clinics are starting to go away, instead turning into corporate clinics with satellite offices. Many rural vets report having to drive multiple hours one way just to get to a client. While Waupun Veterinary Service is not considered a small practice, the clinic s staff of 10 veterinarians often travel an hour or more to service clients in outlying areas. ....
