Dr. Darrel Styles (North Carolina State ’87), Riverdale, Maryland. Dr. Styles is a senior staff veterinarian in the Diagnostics and Biologics unit of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service’s Veterinary Services. He has worked tirelessly in the area of foreign animal disease to improve USDA preparedness and response policy, outreach, and programs. Celebrating Inspiring Leadership During Black History Month | Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine


After earning his PhD at Purdue, Dean Reed served on the faculty and in the Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory.
In recognition of Black History Month, Purdue Veterinary Medicine is highlighting the career of a college leader who also has served in national leadership positions, always with a passion for enhancing the diversity of the veterinary profession our very own Dean Willie Reed. Since earning his DVM degree at Tuskegee University, he has persistently pursued his dream of becoming a veterinarian while expanding opportunities for others from diverse backgrounds to do the same. 
Born in Mobile, Ala., Dean Reed spent his childhood in a nearby small town. Living in a rural community, Dean Reed grew up around many animals.  He also excelled in science classes, which helped foster his interest in studying veterinary medicine. His commitment to the field solidified when his high school vocational agriculture teacher said veterinary medicine would be a good fit for him ....

Level-3 animal health lab reaches construction midpoint - Lab Canada


Abbotsford, BC – The BC government says its new containment level 3 (CL3) lab has reached the midpoint of its construction.
Construction of the $14.5-million high-security lab began in December 2006, as an extension of the existing Animal Health Centre at the Abbotsford Agriculture Centre. It is expected to be completed by January 2008. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency will then test all systems and commission the laboratory before it becomes operational, likely by mid-2008.
The Animal Health Centre is one of only two laboratories in Canada accredited as a full service Veterinary Diagnostic laboratory by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD), demonstrating adherence to quality control and quality assurance procedures. ....
