A globe-trotting Casper sailor who enlisted in the U.S. Navy after a scrape with the law in 1925 crossed the equator with Herbert Hoover and took plenty of photos. His photos are on display at the Wyoming Veterans Memorial Museum in Casper.
The Wyoming National Guard Museum in Cheyenne will host a special photograph exhibit on the Wyoming National Guard’s 115th Cavalry Regiment. The “115th Cavalry at Pole Mountain” exhibition focuses on
Church Hill Firnekas of Buffalo enlisted in the army in 1917 and took 10,000 horses and mules to France. The sea was rough and they couldn’t land. But in true Wyoming cowboy style, Church jumped on a mule and rode him overboard. The horses and other mules followed and they all made it to the shore.
The talk will be presented by Dr. Mark Johnson, a retired career Army officer who is currently writing a two-volume history of the Wyoming Army and Air National Guards. The event will be at the Wyoming Veterans Memorial Museum in Casper on Thursday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. and will also stream on their Facebook page. This is just one in a series of speakers that have been hosted since January, which the museum seeks to make a regular part of their public offerings.
