The sudden death of a Dunedin murderer behind bars has sparked a life-saver change to national court processes.
Venod Skantha, who was convicted of murdering Dunedin teenager Amber-Rose Rush in 2018, is believed to have taken his own life at Otago Corrections Facility in mid-April, just hours after learning of a Court of Appeal decision upholding his conviction.

Teen's killer still a 'doctor' as medical investigation closes after his death


The Medical Council s register of doctors simply lists Skantha as “not practising”.
The junior doctor’s practising certificate expired on February 28, 2018, meaning he was unable to practise medicine, the Medical Council said.

A Professional Conduct Committee (PCC) investigation into Skantha was effectively put on hold pending the outcome of his criminal trial and subsequent appeal.
The PCC investigation would close upon official confirmation of Skantha’s death, a spokeswoman said last week. ....

Questions have been raised as to how Otago Corrections Facility staff were not aware a Court of Appeal decision rejecting Skantha s appeal bid had been released on Wednesday.
Skantha, who was convicted of murdering Dunedin teenager Amber-Rose Rush in 2018, is believed to taken his own life at the prison near Milton in South Otago just hours after learning of the decision to uphold his conviction. ....
