A group of experts in public health, ethics, medicine, law, and journalism have written to Health Minister Harsh Vardhan and Drugs Controller General of India V.G. Somani, appealing for “time-bound and transparent investigation” following deaths and serious adverse effects after COVID-19 vaccination.
“We understand that at least 65 deaths have occurred following vaccination for COVID-19 since the vaccination campaign started on January 16. However, the National AEFI (adverse event following immunisation) Committee’s investigation findings of only two of these deaths have been made public. We believe that due to the possible linkages of vaccination ....

EMA report on AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine and blood clot reports expected tomorrow
Even as the European Medicines Agency (EMA) reviews the AstraZeneca-Oxford University vaccine after more than 10 countries temporarily suspended its use, a group of public health professionals have called for an investigation of deaths and serious adverse events in India as well.
“AEFIs (adverse events following immunisation) are to be investigated through well-defined procedures for vaccine pharmacovigilance, and the reports made available in the public domain, for trust-building and transparency,” the public health representatives said in a letter to Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan and others involved with the vaccines programme. ....

India’s Covid-19 story is panning out in two directions currently. The number of active and daily new cases are trending downwards, and the vaccines administered are charting upwards.
Thirteen days into the vaccination programme, the country has inoculated 2.9 million frontline and healthcare workers against the novel coronavirus. India has seen over 10 million Covid-19 cases and over 150,000 people have lost the infection.
The government has identified 30 million essential workers to vaccinate in the first phase, but the drive has been slow to pick up because of vaccine hesitancy
 and technical glitches. It also plans to vaccinate a total of 300 million Indians by August, focusing on vulnerable groups of people aged over 50, and those with comorbidities. ....
