Sister Abhaya murder case: life in jail for priest, nun

A special CBI court in Kerala on Wednesday sentenced a Catholic priest and a nun who were found guilty of murdering Sister Abhaya, a teenaged nun, to life terms, ending a legal battle that dragged for close to three decades.
The court sentenced Father Thomas Kottoor, 73, to life in jail for murder and trespass to commit a punishable offence and another seven years for destroying evidence.
Sister Sephy, 57, was handed the life term for murder and another seven years in jail for destroying evidence.
Each of them was slapped with a penalty of Rs 5 lakh under IPC Section 302 (murder) and Rs 50,000 each under IPC Section 201 (destruction of evidence). ....

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 23 : A CBI Special Court on Wednesday sentenced Catholic priest Thomas M Kottur to two life terms and co-convict Sister Steffi to life imprisonment for the murder of Sister Abhaya in Kottayam 28 years ago. Judge K Sanilkumar also imposed fines of Rs 5 lakh each on the two convicts.
Kottur has to pay additional Rs 1 lakh as fine as he was also found guilty of trespassing the Pious Tenth Convent, where Sister Abhaya was found dead in a well on March 27, 1992. Kottur was handed the second life imprisonment under Section 449 for barging into the convent. ....

Thiruvananthapuram: A petty thief who does not mind admitting to his little acts of infractions has emerged a star in Kerala after his key role in stoutly defending his witness statement in the nearly 29-year-old Sr Abhaya murder case.
During the days in 1992 when Sr Abhaya was a novitiate nun at the St Pious X Convent in Kottayam, K. Raju was an odd-jobs man who went about some petty thefts, too, on the side to make a living.
Raju, who goes by the name ‘Adakka’ Raju (Adakka is Malayalam for areca nut, as well as for trivial or small), was admittedly at the convent on the morning of the murder with the intention of some petty theft when he saw the two accused priests in the case there. ....
