Québec waste to biofuels plant reaches financial close

Varennes Carbon Recycling, the waste to biofuels plant in Varennes, Québec, has now reached financial close, with investment agreements signed by Proman and its partners, Shell, Suncor, the Government of Québec, and Enerkem.
As part of the investment agreement, Proman will be entitled to market the methanol produced from the plant, which, once the plant is in operation, could make Proman the largest marketer of bio-methanol globally.
The plant is expected to ramp up to a production level of 100 000 tpy of bio and circular methanol, using Enerkem’s technology to convert non-recyclable waste into sustainable methanol, which can then be converted to other low-carbon biofuels such as ethanol and gasoline. ....

Shell pulls out of joint venture to build UK sustainable jet fuels plant

Shell has pulled out of a joint venture with British Airways and Velocys to build a flagship sustainable jet fuels plant in the UK – in a blow to Boris Johnson’s claims that Britain could deliver the world’s first zero-emission long-haul flight, reports EURACTIV’s media partner, The Guardian Environment.
The oil firm was named last year as one of the top companies set to “turbocharge government plans” for sustainable aviation fuels, the centrepiece of the so-called “jet zero” plan to decarbonise flights.
Shell said it would leave the Altalto project, to be built in Immingham, Humberside, days after the company agreed to join a project in Canada which plans to produce more than double the volume of green fuel from less than half the waste. ....

Shell invests in Québec's first waste to low-carbon fuels plant

Shell invests in Québec’s first waste to low-carbon fuels plant
1/7/2021
Shell will have a 40% interest in the plant using technology developed by Enerkem, a leading Canadian clean tech company. Enerkem announced the project in December 2020, subject to finalization of commercial agreements.
The approximately C$875 million commercial-scale facility will be constructed in Varennes, Québec, and will produce low-carbon fuels and renewable chemicals products from non-recyclable waste using Enerkem’s proprietary technology. Commissioning of the first phase of the facility is scheduled for 2023. Critical investment in the plant comes from Shell, Enerkem, Suncor, Proman and Hydro-Québec, as well as from the Québec and Canadian governments. ....
