Commissioners to discuss TIDC grant application

Hays County will need to take further action on its multi-year improvement grant application it submitted to the Texas Indigent Defense Commission to fund its public defender services effort.
The Hays County Commissioners Court will discuss taking action on the application submitted to TIDC during Tuesday’s meeting after funding was not awarded to the county.
In April, the commissioners court unanimously voted in favor of pursuing funding for a three pronged criminal justice reform approach: a Pretrial Services Department, Public Defender Office and a Managed Assigned Counsel program.
The pretrial services department should enhance current systems aimed at fairness and due process, cost effectiveness, while also providing opportunities for review of cases prior to initial appearance and early case resolution opportunities, if deemed appropriate. ....

Commissioners Court prepares for decrease in COVID-19 vaccine demand

At its June 1 meeting, the Hays County Commissioners Court discussed plans to lower the number of COVID-19 vaccine distribution clinics to account for the decreasing demand of vaccines.
Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra says the demand for COVID-19 vaccinations in the county is lowering. However, as of June 1, he says there have been no reports of wasted vaccines in the county.
â[Vaccine] demand has reached its crest, and that high demand is now in the rear-view mirror,â Becerra says.
A proclamation was adopted by the court declaring June 2021 as a month-long celebration of Juneteenth in Hays County. Juneteenth recognizes June 19, 1865, as the date when enslaved people in Texas received freedom two and a half years after the U.S. 1863 Emancipation Proclamation was signed. Vanessa Westbrook of the Hays County Historical Commission and African American Heritage Committee chair says numerous celebrations have been planned for cities across the county. ....

Kyle City Council moves forward with new name for former Rebel Drive: Veterans Drive

After a couple of initial missteps followed by the creation of a broader, community-based process last September, Kyle city officials have decided to move forward on an official new name for what was formerly called Rebel Drive and has temporarily been referred to unofficially as RM 150.
Vanessa Westbrook, a chair of the 15-member W. Ranch to Market Road 150 Naming Committee, told City Council the group selected Veterans Drive out of 72 suggested names.
Westbrook presented the selection to council during the Feb. 2 meeting. After her committee met seven times from Oct. 21-Jan. 6, Westbrook said Veterans Drive garnered the most votes and edged out the other two names that ended up in the top three Albert Taylor Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. ....

Six months after its creation, the W RM 150 Renaming Committee presented the Kyle City Council with a recommendation to replace the controversial Rebel Drive street name.
After backlash from its first proposed renaming to Fajita Drive, city council rescinded the decision and created a committee to help increase public input.
“We scheduled a series of meetings,” Committee Chair Vanessa Westbrook said. “They were designed so that the committee could meet and then have time to go and talk with neighbors. We gathered lots of information from a lot of people.” ....
