Houston candlelit vigil happening May 7, 2020

Published: 1:32 PM CDT May 4, 2021 Updated: 9:05 PM CDT May 7, 2021 HOUSTON The family of the murdered Fort Hood soldier, Vanessa Guillen, is expected to make a special announcement at the candlelit vigil in Houston Friday, according to a news release. The vigil starts at 6 p.m. at the Vanessa Guillen Mural at Taqueria Del Sol, 8114 Park Pl Blvd., Houston, TX 77017. Guillen s mother is expected to say a prayer after a moment of silence during the beginning. Later, her family is expected to make the special announcement. Guillen was born and raised in Houston where she attended Chavez High School and was described as a passionate athlete.

Dozens gather for candlelight vigil on one year anniversary of Spc. Vanessa Guillen s disappearance and last updated 2021-04-23 00:51:44-04 KILLEEN, TX — Dozens gathered at the Vanessa Guillen Mural in Killeen to remember the slain soldier on the one year anniversary of her disappearance. “What happened with Vanessa and her memory and her legacy has caused institutional change,” said Queta Rodriguez with the Fort Hood Independent Review Committee. From San Antonio to Dallas, Washington D.C. and several other cities, vigils were held across the country to show solidarity and support for the #IamVanessaGuillen Act. The Guillen family says they are overwhelmed with all the support.

On the anniversary of her death, her family gathered in Washington, D.C., to push members of Congress to pass a bill to reform the way the military handles sexual assault and harassment allegations. Guillen, 20, was allegedly killed by another solder at the Killeen, Texas, base on April 22, 2020. Her family says she told them she’d been sexually harassed by a sergeant months before her death. “Young men and women … they’re not afraid to take a bullet for our country but they’re afraid to report sexual harassment,” Natalie Khawam, the Guillen family’s lawyer, said at a press conference in Washington Thursday. “This can’t happen anymore. Vanessa Guillen was reported missing. Since then, her story has rocked the nation, shining light on issues within the Armed Forces. On April 22, 2020, 20-year-old Spc. Guillen was seen for the last time on Fort Hood. The next day, the Army CID was notified she was missing. Her disappearance sparked outrage and protests outside the gates of Fort Hood, all in hopes of finding the missing soldier. Spc. Guillen’s remains were found on June 30, 2020. To this day, the family is still seeking justice.
