NZ Rural Land Co buys Van Leeuwen farms in $114m deal


Van Leeuwen was put into receivership by its financer last week.
NZX-listed New Zealand Rural Land Co has entered into a conditional agreement to buy 14 South Island farms from the beleaguered Van Leeuwen Dairy Group for $114 million.
Van Leeuwen was put into receivership early last week by Australian fund manager Merricks Capital, which led a $140m refinancing of the group’s debt in 2019.
The dairy company is 75.06% owned by Aad and Wilma van Leeuwen, with the remaining 24.94% owned by Merricks.
The 14 dairy farming assets in South Canterbury and North Otago total approximately 6350 hectares.

Rural investor clinches deal to buy 14 Van Leeuwen farms for $114m


Van Leeuwen Dairy Group was started by Aad and Wilma van Leeuwen, who arrived in New Zealand in the early 1990s and built a 600ha farm south of Timaru, installing robotic milking machines and eventually added a number of satellite dairy and drystock farms.
The sale is conditional on shareholders’ approval and a special meeting will be held in the next fortnight. It s also conditional on the termination of the receiver by the lender and the Van Leeuwen Group entering into new finance agreements for one of its dairy assets and livestock, and its cooperation with the lender and receiver. ....

The New Zealand sharemarket ended the week on a quiet note and a small gain, with one fund managing saying it is treading water awaiting the latest mini-reporting season.
The S&P/NZX 50 Index edged ahead
15.92 points or 0.13 per cent to 12,731.13, after falling to an intraday low of 12,661.10. There were 66 gainers and 73 decliners over the whole market, with 56.54 million shares worth $192.11 million changing hands.
Matt Goodson, managing director of Salt Funds Management, said the market has been very quiet. One concern is that New Zealand could see high inflation measurements here and overseas over the next several months, with price increases all over the place. ....

First farming business to report M. bovis goes under


Van Leeuwen Dairy Group was started by Aad and Wilma van Leeuwen, who arrived in New Zealand in the early 1990s and built a 600ha farm south of Timaru, installing robotic milking machines.
Eventually they added a number of satellite dairy and drystock farms. But in May last year the group put nine of its properties on the market to focus on the robotic dairy operation, billed once as the world s largest.
