Tom Van Der Borght is the most exciting name in menswear right now


Belgian designer Tom Van Der Borght is speaking to me from Berlin where, some 15 hours prior, he showed his Autumn/Winter 2021 menswear collection (“Seven Ways To Be TVDB / Act 3: A Hopeful Parade”) as part of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. “It’s always nice the morning after the show and you get reactions,” he chirrups down the phone. “It’s a moment I enjoy a lot actually.”
The 42-year-old designer is right to feel upbeat. Mounted in an audience-free show space at the German capital’s former power station (AKA the “Kraftwerk”) and consisting of 21 retina-bending creative looks dubbed “High-Tech Bricolage” by the designer, the show plunged a welcome shot of positivity into the arm during so-called Blue Monday, the most depressing day of the year.  ....

Tom Van Der Borght Berlin Fall 2021 Collection


Tom Van Der Borght says his creations are only finished when he cannot add anything more. The looks in the Belgian designer’s opening show of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Berlin did this idea justice: Elaborate psychedelic outfits including head pieces and garments made with macramé and plastic strips, brightly colored overalls, and glittered faces told the story of a hopeful, more inclusive idea of fashion. 
The collection is part of a bigger artistic vision called “7 ways to be TVDB” in which the designer investigates the idea of non-normativity. As a queer person with a disability, he shares his experiences not only through neon-pink embroideries or a sparkling silver sequin suit, but also hyper-personal items like pins or prints imprinted with his face. ....
