Former Interior Secretaries Call For Border Restoration

Commentary: The borderland region surrounding the US-Mexico border, an area of rich natural and cultural diversity, is in desperate need of federal investment given widespread environmental and social damage caused by the single-minded focus on wall construction, say Bruce Babbitt and Sally Jewell, both former Secretaries of the Interior. The two have forwarded recommendations from community leaders and conservation groups in the border states urging President Biden to reopen strategic sections of the wall to allow for wildlife migration and repair lands and waters damaged during the wall’s construction. They propose a job corps to train and employ residents of impoverished border communities to restore the environment and rebuild a sustainable economy. Their letter, signed by 26 regional conservation leaders who are working cooperatively on both sides of the border, advocates for a binational, community-based effort t ....

LOUISVILLE — On a cool Arizona Sunday afternoon, mission co-workers Miriam Maldonado Escobar and the Rev. Mark Adams gathered with group of Christians on the border between Agua Prieta, Mexico, and Douglas, Arizona, for a prayer pilgrimage in solidarity with the “Not Another Foot” movement to call for an end of the massive border wall spanning the entire Southern border of the United States.
“We come here today with groups all along the border who are calling out ‘not another foot,’ a call to halt the continued destruction of God’s Creation,” said Adams. “At this border between two nations we come together as a common humanity to join our voices and to commit ourselves to working for the day when walls will not divide us and where borders will be places of encount ....

In the Coronado National Memorial where conquistador Francisco Vázquez de Coronado entered what is now Arizona contractors are pulverizing the wilderness in a rush to put up as many miles of border wall as possible before the Trump administration vacates Washington.
They re dynamiting mountainsides and bulldozing pristine desert for a barrier the incoming Biden administration is expected to cancel.
Wow! This is almost like busy work they re doing, exclaims biologist Myles Traphagen as he drives his truck up to the construction staging area and beholds the destruction for the first time. He specializes on the Arizona borderlands for the Wildlands Network. ....
