Durham’s Hillandale Golf Course is dotted with pine and dogwood trees. Though a little less buttoned-up than some courses, it’s still a place people go to play golf—manicured, with shocks of bright green grass—so I was surprised when Joseph O’Connell suggested we meet there to talk.
